A Personal Story of the Effects & Blessings of Missionary Service.

Posted February 16th, 2011 in Featured, Gospel, Missionary by LDSguy

From 1998-2000 I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ohio Cleveland Mission. The boundaries took in the entire northern third of Ohio, and a sliver of Pennsylvania.

I wrote this as an email to my mission president the other night and he asked that I share it on our mission’s Facebook wall. I decided to turn it into a blogpost (but have removed the names for privacy).

The church leaders have encouraged us to stay in touch with our converts. This is a wonderful experience that I had the other day and an example of the long-term blessings from serving a mission.

President Kohlert,

It took almost 11 years but tonight I finally feel like my mission was worth it, and that the Ohio Cleveland mission was where I was meant to serve.

A quick word about the Holy Ghost

Posted February 14th, 2011 in Gospel, Questions by Helaman

I received this email last night from Grant Dangerfield:

Is there any scripture or prophecy that might answer the question: “Will the Holy Ghost have the opportunity to gain a physical body”? And when might that be?

It got me thinking, I mean I knew He didn’t have a body and I don’t recall ever thinking about after everything happens, will He get a body then? So I did some quick searching and found a pretty concise answer to the question.

Joseph Fielding Smith

Joseph Fielding Smith

AVOID SPECULATING ON DESTINY OF THE SPIRIT. The Holy Ghost is not a personage with a body of flesh and bones, and in this respect differs from the Father and the Son. The Holy Ghost is not a woman, as some have declared, and therefore is not the mother of Jesus Christ.

Sign Of The Times #48 – The Gospel Will Flourish In Egypt And A Temple Will Be Built There

Posted February 7th, 2011 in Featured, Gospel, Sign Of The Times, Thoughts by Helaman

Unless you haven’t been paying attention to any news service, you know that Egypt has been protesting and rioting for a new government. It seems that this is a global event and it’s ramifications will be felt around the world. Personally, it’s just one more thing, in a series of events that brings anxiety to my life. As Boyd K. Packer said in April 2010 General Conference:

We live in a day of “wars [and] rumors of wars, and earthquakes in divers places. As prophesied, “the whole earth [is] in commotion” and “Satan is abroad in the land.” He seeks to destroy all that is good and righteous. He is Lucifer, who was cast out of the presence of God.

Provident Living: Year 1

Posted February 2nd, 2011 in Gospel by Helaman

Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail to meet its demands, it crushes you” President J. Reuben Clark Jr., in Conference Report, Apr. 1938, 103

Let me preface this by saying that it may not necessarily be provident living to some, but it is a huge change in my families spending habits and a change in our mindset of how we want to handle money in the future.

I also need to give a little background on our family. We made the choice some years ago to be be a one income family, though there may have been times since then that both of us have worked, we’ve never relied on daycare or outside systems to take care of any of our kids. We also had gotten ourselves into some bad habits, like using credit cards to supplement our income and by the end, racked up quite a bit of debt. I won’t use exact figures, but it was sufficient to finally make my wife and I sick of the situation and decide to make some changes. We still struggle, but we are making it.
